ChristinaCALDWELL, Idaho (Aug 16, 2024) – The 100th anniversary of the Caldwell Night Rodeo is starting to wind down with just one more performance left.
While it will conclude Saturday night, Friday night’s rodeo saw a fundraising arena record, a new leader in the saddle bronc riding and two of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s best bull riders conquer their four-legged adversaries.
In the saddle bronc riding it was Calgary Stampede’s horse Y.U.R. Friskey that got a rider to the pay window for a second time. Tanner Butner from Daniel, Wyoming was the lucky man to get on the athletic bucking horse on Friday. He watched his traveling partner Chase Brooks get on the horse on Wednesday and score 88 points to put him in first place.
After Butner’s eight-second effort on the bucking horse, he had an 88.5 by his name and that moved his traveling partner down to a tie for second place. Kade Bruno from Challis, Idaho also had an 88-point ride on Thursday.
After Thursday night’s shut-out in the bull riding, everyone was cheering for the riders on Friday night hoping for some big scores. The men in fourth and fifth place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings were both on the roster and both rode their bulls. Creek Young from Rogersville, Missouri, had the highest score at 86.5 points. He rode Powder River Rodeo’s Sweet Train. Not far behind him was T.J. Gray from Dairy, Oregon.
Gray is headed to his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December. He is currently fifth in the world standings and well inside the top 15 that earn a spot in Las Vegas to compete at rodeo’s championships. Gray scored 85 points on Powder River Rodeo’s Bad Bad Bull.
The bull riding here is one full round of competition with scores placed throughout the five performances. Young is currently fourth here and Gray is one spot behind him. They will have to wait through Saturday night’s rodeo to see how it all finishes.
The Caldwell Night Rodeo is well known for the programs they implement to raise money for their community. Friday night was Patriot Night. An American Flag that also depicted veteran’s and said “Freedom isn’t Free,” was taken around the arena and then auctioned off. It brought a record price of $31,000 for the rodeo’s Military Relief Fund. The flag was purchased by the Warhawk Air Museum.
Saturday night will see the conclusion of the 100th Caldwell Night Rodeo with the Championship Finals. It will start at 8 p.m. at the D & B Arena.
