CODY, Wyo. — The second performance of the 107th Cody Stampede will be remembered for more than just outstanding rides and runs. Fierce Wyoming winds created one of the most challenging nights competitors have faced this season, testing both contestants and livestock alike.
Just 30 minutes before Thursday night’s performance at Stampede Park, wind gusts reached 56 miles per hour. Although no rain accompanied the weather, the powerful winds remained a factor throughout much of the evening, adding another level of difficulty for competitors.
Lanita Peirce Takes Over Barrel Racing Lead
The night’s only event leader change came in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing, where veteran cowgirl Lanita Peirce of Wynnewood, Oklahoma, turned in a blazing 17.06-second run aboard her 10-year-old mare, Famous Wahini, affectionately known as “Lexie.”
The pair recently captured the Senior World Championship Barrel Racing title, and Thursday’s performance gives Peirce an excellent opportunity to add another prestigious championship to her résumé.
With barrel racing slack still remaining along with the final two performances, Peirce’s lead is far from secure, but history suggests she’s in a strong position. Last year’s winning Cody Stampede time finished just under 17 seconds.
Stetson Wright Holds Strong in Saddle Bronc Riding
After taking the lead Wednesday night with an 89.5-point ride, Stetson Wright remained atop the saddle bronc standings.
Wyatt Casper narrowed the gap with an impressive 88-point ride, while Chase Brooks moved into third with 87.5 points, setting up an exciting finish over the Independence Day weekend.
New Leaders Emerge Across the Arena
Several events saw significant movement during Thursday’s performance.
Cash Robb of Altamont, Utah, took over the steer wrestling lead with a lightning-fast 3.6-second run, while world champions Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nunes moved to the top of the team roping with a 4.1-second run.
Canadian cowboy Stran Dunham delivered one of the fastest tie-down roping runs of the week, stopping the clock in 7.5 seconds.
Despite difficult weather conditions, competitors in nearly every event improved their positions heading into the final days of one of rodeo’s most celebrated Fourth of July traditions.
Competition resumes Friday evening at 8 p.m. with the third performance of the Cody Stampede.
