DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 20, 2026) — Tyler Waguespack from Gonzales, Louisiana has easily been the most consistent steer wrestler at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo so far this year.
Waguespack competed in Bracket 5 on Monday and Tuesday. He stopped the clock in 3.7 seconds on Monday and came back Tuesday night just one-tenth of a second slower at 3.8. The five-time world champion advances to the Semi-Finals as the leader in Bracket 5 with a total time of 7.5 seconds.
Waguespack has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) 11 times. He won three consecutive world titles from 2021 – 2023. He has won rodeos from coast to coast, and while he has had success in the Denver Coliseum in the past, he has never won the championship here. Currently ranked 10th in the world standings, he is hoping to change that this year and leave Denver with the buckle that goes to the champion here.
He would also earn the lion’s share of the prize money. He is currently on track to win prize money in the preliminary rounds but will have to wait through Bracket 8 to see where he lands. He is assured a spot in Saturday’s Semi-Finals where he will be among eight steer wrestlers vying for four spots in Sunday’s Championship Finals. And he is building momentum for the remainder of the season where he hopes to qualify for his 12th NFR and earn another gold buckle. Then he would be tied with Homer Pettigrew for the most steer wrestling titles earned in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. A win at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo would help put him one step closer to his goals.
The Denver Coliseum will once again be filled with rodeo action on Wednesday with performances at 1:30 and 7 p.m.
